John Densky is a documentary photographer from Canada who has photographed the changing face of the worlds newest mega-city, Lagos. By 2015, Lagos is expected to be the most populated city in the world and the financial hub of Africa. Since 2009, John has been documenting the security and judicial system within Nigeria and hopes to contribute to the international communities commitment to engagement with the Nigerian state with a strong focus on human rights.
The Nigerian police have been committing extrajudicial killings, torture, rape and extortion with impunity for decades. The NPF routinely execute suspects: rely on torture as a principal means of investigation: rapes both men and women indiscriminately; and regularly engage in extortion at every opportunity. In the past 10 years over 10,000 Nigerians have died at the hands of those who are charged with protecting them.
In 2012, John hopes to return to Nigeria and begin a portrait series of members of the Nigerian Police Force. The funds raised through John’s IndieGoGo campaign will fund the travel and production section of the portrait series. Please help support an intervention.
