How is it so many Russians managed to get those awesome meteor shots from their cars? Dash cams are getting more popular but I doubt very much if something like that happened here in Halifax there’d one video let alone a dozen. Turns out I wasn’t the only one thinking that.
WIRED did some research into the topic and it turns out that “lax — and often corrupt — law enforcement, and a legal system that rarely favors first-hand accounts of traffic collisions has made dash cams all but a requirement for motorists.”
Insurance scams are notorious as well. Many include the popular back into you and claim you hit them trick. For a few $$$ they’ll let the whole thing go. Having a video record that tells your side of the story is as good an insurance plan as you can get.
Russian drivers are also accident prone. With 35,972 road deaths in 2007, Russia averages 18 traffic fatalities per 100,000 people. Canada has about 9 while the United States comes in at 12.3. (Link)
With the massive proliferation of GoPros and other less expensive cameras, it seems like every second of Russia’s free-for-all roads is recorded. I prefer the GoPro myself but find the Contour 2+ easier to use so it ends being the default come-along. I’ve seen a few around Halifax but not many. Never know if it’ll catch on or not but some of the videos out of Russia sure must make some people think about it.
