“I will be born a girl, which means that by the time I’m 14, the boys in my class will have called me a whore, a bitch, a cunt,” she tells her dad. “One thing leads to another,” she explains.
Norway has produced a powerful PSA around sexual violence and how important it is for fathers to speak to their sons about respect, boundaries, consent, and healthy relationships. Boys will almost always grow up to be the men their fathers are. If a man beats his family, his son will probably grow up and do the same. If a father objectifies women, his son will objectify women.
Who a son will be when he grows up is directly related to how much his father loves and cares for him. The worst thing a father could ever have is a son who grows up to commit rape.
The PSA isn’t about blaming men. It’s about getting men to step up and change the lives of the people they love and care about. Especially daughters.
Raise the kind of boy who will see someone vulnerable and step in to help them and protect them. The kind of boy who has the courage to step up and take a stand for the girls in his school and community.
That is the only kind of son a man should brag about.
