Objection – a poem on Trauma & Memory

This powerful video poem was shared with me on Twitter by it’s creator Motherbird Sidrah. The video was made to illustrate the fact that trauma affects memory.

It’s important to remember trauma affects memory in light of the Ghomeshi trial taking place in Toronto. Trauma also affects how people react when they try to deal with what has happened.

One of the reasons charges weren’t laid in Rehtaeh’s case was one of the males texted her to ask if she was okay a couple days after they raped her. She replied she was fine with everything. Of course she’d say that – she was a fifteen year old who was just gang raped and a story is going viral she was a “slut” and wanted it. Her intention was to try to get it to go away and minimize what had happened to her. That’s a normal reaction.

Thank you for the video Sidrah.

You have no idea how much I needed this video. I’ve been through this. No one seems to understand what it’s like to be questioned about things you honestly can’t remember.

I glad it was useful for you. It’s a haunting and powerful video.
