Reclaim Your Voice

Since 2012, Reclaim Your Voice has been creating platforms for survivors of abuse to break their silence through storytelling, poetry, music and visual arts. Being supported while disclosing about abuse can mean a huge step on the healing journey for a survivor.

They are hosting an event May 20th in Toronto and it’s going to be an incredible night. If you can’t come please think about a donation.

WHO WE ARE: Since 2012, Reclaim Your Voice has been creating platforms for survivors of abuse to break their silence through storytelling, poetry, music and visual arts. Being supported while disclosing about abuse can mean a huge step on the healing journey for a survivor. Created in the name of peace and healing for all, Reclaim Your Voice offers much needed safe spaces for survivors to support, validate and fortify one another.

WHAT WE’RE DOING: On May 20th, 2016 we are holding our first fundraising event (18+), a screening of four video portraits created by Toronto artist and founder of Reclaim Your Voice, Reesee Zigga Zagga which feature survivors sharing their stories. There will also be spoken word performances, and a musical performance from special guest Grammy Award winning artist Mýa. We believe that by telling our stories and owning our truths, we can and will affect positive change in this world, which is why we have chosen “Weapon of Voice” as the title of this event.

WHY THIS IS SPECIAL: We have decided to make this an invite only event, with 175 tickets being given to survivors of various forms of abuse. With your donation of $25, a survivor will receive a ticket to this event. The ticket will be given in your name and will read, “I Believe You” – words that can mean a world of hope to someone who may not have heard those words when they first needed to. With this message, and with the experience of this very special event, we are reminding survivors that there is still good left in the world, and that even though horrible and unjust things have happened in the past, wonderful things can happen too; there is always something worth holding on for.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU: Donors who give $100 or more will receive a ticket to the event (Must be 18 years or older to claim tickets and attend event). For donations over $200, see our Donation Levels section for more awesome perks, like a personal video thank you from Mýa or an opportunity to meet her in person at an intimate meet and greet! The funds raised will go toward another year of Reclaim Your Voice programming which includes hiring the onsite support of certified therapists, art supplies, food, and more.

THE FACTS: According to Statistics Canada, 1 out of every 2 Canadian women experiences physical or sexual violence. Only 1 out of every 10 of these women file a report due to humiliation or fear of revictimization. Others who have experienced abuse are even less likely to come forward for these same reasons and other social stigmas. Many survivors who choose to open up about their experiences unfortunately face further traumatization when they are ignored, blamed for the abuse, denied justice, or disbelieved. This is why we created Reclaim Your Voice: because sharing stories is so important to a survivor’s healing and crucial to the prevention of further incidents of abuse from occurring.
