I Was Seven Years Old

I was seven years old when he took me by the hand and led me into his lair of secrets and threats.

I was seven years old when he told me to close my eyes while he touched my small shivering body.

I was seven when I buried myself in the cold concrete basement of our home.

It’s taken 45 years of painful digging, but I finally found that resting place.

I can be whole.

I’m free.

Rehtaeh’s Robot is My New Tattoo

This morning I was reading over my Facebook feed when I saw a post about how tattoos help sexual assault survivors reclaim their bodies. When Rae asked to get a tattoo after she was sexually assaulted I was not quite onboard. I thought she’d get the wrong one and regret it or she was too young (she got it on her 16th birthday).

After she got it you should have seen the look on her face. Later she told her mom she felt like it was her body again.

This is my latest tattoo. It’s a robot from a drawing Rehtaeh created on graph paper. I love seeing her art on my arm.

Useless Trivia

It’s 2017 and that makes my coolest t-shirt 14 years old. It’s from a 2003 explosive ordnance disposal course I was on in Florida. Still keep in touch with some of these guys. Saudi Arabia should be on the shirt too. Can’t remember why they were left out but I think it was about timing.
